How to Travel Kashmir on a Budget: Stays & Transport
Introduction
Kashmir can be expensive if you book luxurious five-star resorts and private premium vehicles, but it is completely possible to explore the gorgeous valley on a budget. By understanding sharing taxis, budget homestays, and local food spots, you can save significant money.
1. Budget Stays & Cozy Homestays
Instead of expensive luxury resorts, look for local homestays and registered guesthouses. Srinagar and Pahalgam have many family-run accommodations starting at ₹1,500 per night. These stays are clean, offer home-cooked Kashmiri meals, and provide a wonderful chance to interact with locals.
2. Transport: Sharing Cabs & Public Buses
Private cabs from Srinagar to Gulmarg or Pahalgam cost around ₹2,500 to ₹3,500 per day. To save money:
- Sharing Cabs: Head to the Batamaloo or Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) taxi stand in Srinagar. Sharing cabs to Tangmarg (for Gulmarg) or Anantnag (for Pahalgam) run daily and cost only ₹150 - ₹250 per passenger.
- Local Sightseeing: Walking is the best way to explore Srinagar gardens and Pahalgam river banks. For local sightseeings in Pahalgam, share a union cab with other tourists at the taxi stand.
3. Street Food & Local Bakers (Kandur)
Kashmiri street food is delicious and affordable. Visit local bakers (Kandur) in the morning for hot Girda or Tsot breads served with salted tea (Noon Chai). For lunch, try street food like Tujji (charcoal-grilled mutton skewers served with local chutneys) or local vegetarian dishes at dhabas around Lal Chowk.
